A fresh new addition to the Granville Island scene: WHET Kitchen.Bar.Patio! Formerly Sammy J Pepper’s location, the owners have switched things up and shed the pepper scene to go for a more fresh locally sourced menu concept.

With one of the largest patios in Vancouver, overlooking the Granville Island harbour, this will surely be a hot spot in the sun!

WHET opened just a few days ago, and already were hopping with weekend business for their debut weekend. Our table enjoyed a variety of the menu items, and we all left full and happy. The service was friendly, the food was fresh, and that is what I will return for – especially their to-die-for seafood chowder, and these delicious dishes:

Classic fish and chips... The British guests I dined with said the fish passed with flying colours.

Small potions, greasy food… New staff and aLl of them seem under trained. Don’t bring a big party.. We were 8.. Took an hour for food. Typical.. Good restaurant turned bad.. Oh well.

Sorry to hear that. Not that I have any invested interest here, but in all fairness, I think it’s only fair to give restaurants more than one chance after an unsatisfying experience. From some interviews I’ve done, industry people feel this way too. Plus this is a brand new restaurant, now open less than 2 weeks, who admitted they are ironing out their service and menu with this soft launch.

I had dinner there with my girlfriend and some friends last week and it was awesome! Fresh food made with local ingredients and excellent service. I love the view and the fresh shucked oysters actually come with some unique sauces…not just cocktail sauce and Tabasco. The service was fast and friendly and the food was outstanding to say the least! Great place for sure!

I have a couple friends who have worked in (and left) the kitchen in that restaurant. I hear its a lot of pre packaged food and crap quality…

This place used to be ok about two or three months ago. Went there a few days ago and the server said they had fired the chef ….well it shows as the food was brutal. Greasy and non appetizing. Too bad the food used to be amazing! These guys better re-hire that chef or find another one soon!

That is too bad, I had a great experience in the first week that it opened, but I haven’t had a chance to return much. Too bad that bad-food-news travels QUICKLY around this town! I wish them luck in turning it around again though.
